The Benefits Of Utilizing Tactical Screens

A few months ago, I put up a Tactical Notebook Discover post about the wisdom of utilizing tactical screens for harvesting decision-making information, but the truth is the benefits of using tactical screens are all kinds of useful if you are generally interested in being efficient with your resources.

For those who didn’t read the post, or who want a refresher, in game theory or economics, a tactical screen is a strategy or mechanism used to prevent or obscure direct competition or conflicts by creating a form of separation, uncertainty, or filtering. It can function in various ways depending on the context, but generally, tactical screens serve to:

  1. Disguise Intentions or Actions: Players may use screens to hide their true strategies, intentions, or values from other competitors, keeping them in the dark about their plans. This can prevent opponents from predicting or countering moves effectively.
  2. Filter Participants: In markets or negotiations, tactical screens can help differentiate or select participants based on specific qualities or willingness to take certain risks. This screening can lead to better matching of players with similar or complementary goals.
  3. Create Uncertainty or Delay Responses: Screens can delay or soften direct responses from opponents by introducing uncertainty, encouraging them to take a wait-and-see approach rather than responding aggressively.

To provide you with some better context about what all that means, we should take a couple of minutes here to explore two more important concepts within game theory and economics: preferences and separated pooling.

Preferences can be neatly separated into two broad categories: Revealed preferences and displayed preferences.

Revealed preferences and displayed preferences are two related but distinct concepts in economics and behavioral science. They deal with how preferences are expressed and understood, particularly in cases where there may be a difference between what people say they prefer and what their actual choices reveal.

Revealed preferences refer to the preferences inferred from an individual’s actual choices and behaviors. The theory of revealed preferences, developed by economist Paul Samuelson, assumes that people make choices that maximize their satisfaction or utility given their budget constraints. Therefore, by observing their actions (e.g., what they buy, where they invest time), economists can deduce what their true preferences are, as opposed to the preferences they publicly project.

Pooling equilibrium occurs in situations where players or agents of different types choose the same action or signal, making it impossible for observers (e.g., employers, buyers, insurers, marketers, etc) to distinguish between these types based solely on their observed behavior. Pooling equilibria are particularly relevant in signaling games where one party has private information that the other party lacks (known as information asymmetry problems). For example, in your family court dealings, your ex and his legal team have important decision-making information that you need to make your own decisions, however they are not revealing that information to you – they are hiding or withholding it.

Characteristics of a pooling equilibrium:

  1. Identical Behavior Across Types: Agents with different characteristics (types) choose the same signal or action. This makes them appear similar to the observer, even if they have different underlying attributes.
  2. Lack of Distinction: Observers cannot differentiate between types based on the observable signal or action, leading them to treat different types as if they were the same.
  3. Unrevealed Information: In a pooling equilibrium, the action does not convey specific information about the agent’s type, meaning there is no “sorting” based on type.

In this kind of equilibrium, all “types” send the same “signal,” meaning that the action or signal doesn’t reveal any specific information about the person type. This can lead to situations where one type may benefit from being indistinguishable from another, potentially gaining advantages such as better job offers, loans, or prices.

Consider a job market where employers can’t directly observe the skill level of job candidates. If high-skilled and low-skilled candidates choose to submit identical credentials (such as the same level of education or work experience), the employer cannot distinguish between them based on these signals alone. If both high-skilled and low-skilled individuals find it optimal to do so, a pooling equilibrium occurs, as employers are unable to infer skill levels from the observed credentials.

If you are following all this, you have likely inferred that pooling can lead decision errors on the part of those trying to understand the type of person or group of people they are dealing with.

Lack of Differentiation means players with different types do not differentiate themselves through their actions, leading others to treat them as if they are the same type. Signal Ambiguity where chosen signals do not convey any distinct information about the sender’s type, making it hard for receivers to distinguish or make decisions based on individual characteristics. And the Potential for Inefficiency because pooling equilibria can lead to inefficiencies, as individuals with favorable traits may be undervalued, while those with less favorable traits benefit from being indistinguishable.

In contrast, a separating equilibrium is when players of different types choose different actions, making their types observable to others. In our job market example, a separating equilibrium would occur if high-skilled individuals chose to obtain higher levels of education or specific certifications, thus signaling their higher skill levels to employers. In a separating equilibrium, unlike in a pooling equilibrium, different types make distinct choices that “separate” them, making it possible for observers to distinguish between them based on their choices alone.

Key Characteristics of Separating Equilibrium:

  1. Distinct Signals: Players or agents of different types choose different actions or signals that correlate with their true characteristics.
  2. Information Revelation: Because each type behaves differently, observers can accurately infer which type of agent they are dealing with.
  3. Stability: In a separating equilibrium, no type of player has an incentive to mimic another type, as doing so would either be too costly or would not bring any additional benefit.

In sum, a separating equilibrium creates a setting where individuals with different types behave differently enough that others can reliably deduce their types based on these observable actions, facilitating better-informed decisions and more accurate market outcomes.

Employing Tactical Screens To Improve The Love and Iron Project:

The challenge for the Project is to eliminate the gap between helping each member achieve their individual family goals while concurrently pursuing our bigger, long-term objectives of reversing public sentiment, evaporating the false narratives around selfish parenting, and getting folks properly informed about the harmful effects this behavior has on parents and children alike.

The notion of a “gap” arises from the stark reality that most folks (often rightly) prioritize the resolution of their own problems over the bigger picture, longer horizon goals of family law reform or PA awareness.

From the outset of my decision to change the strategic maneuvering of the Love and Iron Project several years ago, I have resolved to work toward eliminating this gap, meaning; that by helping you focus on your individual goals, the Project is also more empowered to help all of us collectively acquire the political leverage and public sentiment changes we need to fix the bigger, underlying systematic problems.

Up until this point, I have had many of our various systems and features sort of splashed around the website more or less independently, however today, that is coming to an end.

Last week, I noted the Project’s preferences priority:

  1. Growing our community (political leverage)
  2. Public Messaging (public influence)
  3. Handbook ownership (individual plan building)
  4. Private Network membership (support tools and resources)

The reality is that when it comes to eliminating the gap between individual support and the bigger project goals by harmonizing our efforts into a seamless system – both for you and for us; well, everything is connected. The key is to construct effective screens and organize efficient separating pools.

So today, I am reorganizing some stuff and releasing some new features we’ve had in waiting. and doing this with all the stuff mentioned so far in mind.

A Review Of Current (Some New) Member Tools:

Private Social Network:

Up until this time, we have been offering access to our private social with the Free Legacy Lifetime Membership offer. We’ve had some takers, but not many – and I suspect that is because some folks have been underwhelmed by the value it offers.

Member Handbook:

After years of personal toil, I am finally releasing handbook chapters (this resource can be utilized as both a handbook and a learning course). I have offered various ways of getting folks into the handbook, no real takers; which is okay and not unexpected.  This resource is not a quick fix to anyone’s problems.  It will require study, effort, and practice, and everyone is encouraged to utilize it at their own pace. I expect activity and interest will increase with time and with the subsequent release of additional chapters.

Tactical Notebook:

This is really just a bridge between the handbook and those who are not ready to make a full leap into putting a comprehensive plan together. The emphasis on these posts are tactical in nature; meaning the idea is to highlight and exploitable tendency so that you can neutralize yourself from being manipulated by it, employ it against your opponents, and, create positive reversals because of both. Up until recently, the Tactical Notebook has been bundled in with the Legacy Lifetime membership, but a few weeks ago, I opened it up to all – just because…. why not?

On the one hand, I do not want this information easily accessible to adversaries. On the other hand, I do not really want to deny this stuff to registered members because I know it can help them, and the posts are easily found with our live return search tool.

In the end, I have decided to split the difference. The Tactical Notebook will no longer be a premium feature, but a free network membership will be required to access it.

Legacy Points:

If you have logged in, you may have noticed a widget in the upper right or left corner that displays a “Legacy Points Balance”.  That system has been installed for quite awhile, but I had not fully implemented the concept that utilizes it. Legacy Points are earned by being active within the website and for certain qualified purchases.  For example, every time you log in, make a post, like a post, join a group, etc; you get a Legacy Points reward. Those points can then be redeemed within The Legacy Store for physical items.

Member Services Directory:

Last night, I unlocked this new site feature.  In keeping with the mantra that we are a network that takes care of our own, I have installed a listings directory, complete with a member rating profile where members can search the following categories:

  1. Political Action Organizations – If you are a member of, or would like to support a specific political action or cause awareness organization, you can submit a listing that other members can query so they can get connected.
  2. PA Counselling and Coaching – Providers or supporters can submit a listing for themselves or a recommended provider.
  3. Member Products & Services – In general, the handbook chapter progression follows a specific path, and one of those chapters deals with creating income producing projects that can be used to fund your legal expenses or child support obligations. Whether your are self employed already, in some kind of sales capacity, or looking to market your personal income project, you may list it here. Other members will be able to find you by searching the category you have assigned to what you are offering.
  4. L&IP Groups And Special Projects – This is more or less a catch all for any fun projects or groups you wish to advertise and promote to the network.
  5. Legal – This one is a bit different. While lawyers or other family court agents can submit a listing if they are members, it is really intended for YOU and others to list the law firms you have used and rate them – providing any comments you think will be useful to the public at large.

Targeted Influence Campaigns:

At the very heart of what we are about is the idea of strategic and tactical reversals.  Keep that in mind, because coming down the pike, we will be helping members with targeted influence campaigns for alienating parents, estranged adult children, and lawmakers. It is long past time to flip the script – more on this later.

Site Tools And Features:

I’ve already mentioned our incoming member project manager, this will go hand in hand with the Handbook and any projects you wish to complete or promote. I will let you know when we are ready to release it.

Okay, So Here's The Nut Of It Going Forward:

Things are going to be greatly simplified from this point forward.

First, there are no more Legacy Lifetime Members and the special event has been pulled. Do not worry if you had this premium membership award, because you’ve still got the same benefits you have enjoyed up to this point. In fact you’ve got more benefits!

Going forward, we are bundling everything into one achievement perk (Champion Messenger Achievement):

  • The Handbook,
  • The Member Services Directory
  • Access to our private social network
  • Private Chat and chat rooms
  • Network groups
  • The ability to update your member profile
  • The private Legacy Key Holder knowledge base in our Member Forums
  • Access to new incoming site features.

All that stuff has been bundled into one achievement that earns you Legacy Key Holder Status (i.e. the Champion Messenger achievement unlocks everything for you).

You will recall that one of my primary concerns all along with respect to private areas of our site, whether it is our social network, our tactical knowledge base, or other priveleged areas is the desire to keep the stalkers, spammers, and trolls out of it.  We have software that helps a lot, BUT, the best way to keep these people out of areas they do not belong is to require a credit card, so for much of what I have put out so far, we have asked for a small, almost trivial fee to let people in. This has worked pretty well.

However, as much as screens are great for getting people to reveal themselves, they are also great for keeping people out of areas you do not want them to be in.

So, starting from today, I’m going to make our screen even stronger, and the way to unlock Legacy Keyholder status is to purchase one of our messaging items, which, awards the Champion Messenger Achievement that unlocks Legacy Keyholder membership status.

In short, if a member wants access to premium resources, they’re going to have to help us with messaging. On the upside, this is a win-win for you and I, because it eliminates the gap I’ve been talking about by promoting our important message while providing you with effective tools that you can use to solve your individual family court related challenges!

Also on the upside (again for all of us), getting an ugly to fork over twenty dollars using a credit card for an item that speaks against selfish parenting and parental alienation is, well, pretty damn slim. I mean, some of them will be committed enough to do it, but if they go this far, and trust me on this, they will reveal themselves, we will find them, ban them, and use their money for the greater good!

Additionally, and as an another perk, when purchasing a messaging item, you will also be awarded 500 legacy points to your account balance that you can redeem for items from the Legacy Store. So, there is that also.

Now, back to the Legacy Lifetime Members….If you had this premium membership, your membership has already been converted to Legacy Key Holder status, the Champion Messenger Achievement awarded to your account, and 500 legacy points added to your legacy points balance (even if you received your premium membership for free under the terms of the Legacy Lifetime Members Special Event). In other words, you do not have to buy an item, but….well…..I will appreciate it if you do – it helps all of us!

Lastly, I just want to mention this in passing, you may have noticed that the Project’s payments and ordering system is, ah….a crude one.

The truth is, my attention has been focused one hundred percent on getting the site’s content, member tools, and systems in place. That’s been the priority.

I will eventually formally build out the store and integrate a payment system with it, but that is still way down the list of priorities. Those systems are actually pretty expensive in terms of time and money to build, so I will get to it when the time is right to address it.  When the transaction volume increases, I will move on to this punch list item. Until then, it is order forms and PayPal invoices.

Caveats, And In Closing...

The Legacy Keyholder membership status pretty much serves exactly the same role as the Legacy Lifetime Membership. It will award you access to our private social, member site tools, and the Tactical Notebook blog category for life with no other fees to pay again, EVER.  So you will always have that stuff with your Legacy Key.

However, features like the Member Handbook, Member Services Directory, And Targeted Campaigns will EVENTUALLY be broken off and offered separately. So if you want to get a taste of using those tools, now is the time to give them a try!

Lastly, as to when and how these other features will become separated, well, that will depend on how the member pool separates (see, you CAN actually use the stuff I am giving you)! We’ll just have to see how it goes and take care of business when it is time to take care of it.

As always, do not hesitate to reach out to me personally (michael@loveandiron.com) should you have any questions.

I hope all is well with you, and I look forward to keeping you up to date of all the other future improvements we have mapped out to help you as things continue to be unpacked.

Warmest Regards,
Michael (Huckleberry)
